I will not be running the Peachtree Road Race for the first time in over 15 years. I did not get a number this year but now that it is close I kind of wish I had one. I knew Ashley was not going to be able to run this year so I thought about getting a number but have not been as motivated. If you have run Peachtree you are aware it is not a run to post a good time but to have fun. Ashley and I had turned it into a game of who could collect the most stuff (t-shirts, food, etc) during the race. Tiffany was not interested in running and Carolee and I do not seem to be motivated to run without them.

So the first free July 4th in over 15 year will probably be more relaxing. I am sure I will still go out for a run but will be a LOT less crowded. Then probably some chilling out to get ready for a busy July. I am sure when I see someone with the Peachtree t-shirt from this year I will wish I had run. Hopefully everyone will be around next year so all 4 of us can run together again.

Good luck to all that are running and someone grap a donut around mile 3 and think about me when you are eating it.

Big Dog Running Company

The Big Dog Running Company is off and running. We have been open over a month now and and we are close to getting it the way we want it. It may never be exact but it is going to be a great place for the running community. We are very excited what it can be in the future.

We will be having regular events through out the year. Races will not be the only events. We will have a regular speaker series, special nights for ladies, teams and groups. Regular running groups to provide support for runners at all level. Training programs for the novice as well as the experienced runner. There will also be yoga classes in the store geared towards runners.

Our first major event will be the Big Dog Jingle 5k this Saturday. Come out and run, it should be a fun morning. The Grand Opening is the following weekend with the ribbon cutting Friday at noon. We hope you can make it.

Run for the Heroes Follow up

I did not get to do updates as I thought I would. The main reason is I was sick from the start and did not feel like it. The air card coverage was spotty as well.

We made it through and had a great time as a team. Our team is in the process of well documenting our experience in word and pictures. Go to Run for the Heroes for a recap of how everyone did. I can’t wait until next year.

Update on some items in this blog

I have not updated this in a will so had kind of forgotten about it. I had a meeting with someone who had googled me and found this blog. He was asking about my “Ideas’ entry so I thought I would give an update. One idea was to have a video testimonial about my cancer story but nothing has come of that. I am not great on the lens side of a camera. This one will probably not happen.

The second was to create a trail created around my church. This one has happened(or at least half way). I found an Eagle Scout candidate named Taylor Reynolds and he made it happen. He created the portion of the trail in the woods behind the church. It is about a 1/4 mile trail through the woods and turned out great. Thanks to Taylor and all the scouts that helped him on this project. I need to find another scout to complete the rest of the trail around the property perimeter if anyone wants to volunteer.

The third ideas was to have a marathon in Columbus. This one will happen on November 13, 2010. It will be the Soldier Marathon. A friend of mind(John Teeples) and I were discuss this at a Christmas party and a few months later we have made it happen. It should be a great event. If you need to some help training, contact the Columbus Roadrunners and get connect with some running groups.

Anyway, this is my update. Maybe I will update again a little sooner next time.

Hiking in the Smokies

My family loves to hike and we got the opportunity to do just that this past weekend. Carolee, Tiffany, Ashley and I hiked the trails around Elkmont in the Smoky Mountains. We had not been there before but decided we choose well after we were finished. It was not too strenuous so allowed us to hike a little longer. We ended up going 9.5 miles along the Little River Trail and Cucumber Gap trail. We started and ended near Elkmont and got a little history lesson about the town of Elkmont and how it came into being. To learn more about the history of Elkmont check out this link. After we got back to my mom’s house we were hungry and had a major throw-down on the chow. Tiffany is graduating in May so I hope we can get another hike in when we are up there. There are still a lot of trails in the Smokies to get to.

Getting Back in Shape

I am getting back to my old self running. I have been telling people if you don’t run for 9 months you are going to get out of shape if you had chemo treatment or not. But I have gotten back into pretty good shape quicker than I thought I would. I ran the Red Nose Half-Marathon back on Jan 10 and did great. I am not as fast as I was before but just being able to complete 13.1 miles in under 2 hours I was VERY happy with. Dr. Pippas said it would be 6 months or so before I got back to normal but I am way ahead of that schedule. I have set some goals to get back to a marathon before the summer. I hope to do a trail half- marathon Feb. 28. That should give me a good marker as to fitness improvements.

Good Test Results

Just a quick note that I got results back on my Pet Scan earlier this week and was all positive. Dr. Pippas said this was a big test for me and all was clear. It was not worried about it until I got in the waiting room and started thinking about what I would do if they were not clear. I guess I will be worried about it every time I go back to the Dr. Comes with the territory.

I had a friend ask me to give a short talk on my experiences to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in the next month or 2. I look forward to doing it and depending on how it goes may offer to do it other places. I hope to write a testimonal to put here in the coming weeks as I create the presentation for the FCA.
